Many of you know that I had a whopper of a computer crash
back in May, ironically, while sending out the Jargon. Due to one reason or
another, I was without a computer for a total of eleven weeks, during which
time there was no Jargon, and consequently no announcements of or about our
Club’s activities in May, June or July. My apologies to the Club for this
unfortunate accident, and any effect it may have had on the normal flow of
information to our membership. A few pieces of information “disappeared” from
my database(s), some of which was Lions related; as you speak to each other,
please inquire as to whether other members have or have not received this
issue of the Jargon. Please advise any member that has not received this
issue to contact me; regular mail recipients can call me: members who get
the Jargon via e-mail can contact me at BobV@cranbury.org.
For some reason, last year’s meeting attendance was
unusually low. As Lions, we have agreed to help the community through
fundraising and volunteerism. In the past, our members have volunteered,
directly, at meetings. With attendance down, so is our volunteer corps. We realize
that the dynamics of our Club have changed and members have more demanding
roles with careers and family, but the Board has asked that all members make
every effort to attend as many meetings as possible throughout the year. The
Board would welcome any and all constructive comments on how we can boost
attendance at the regular business meetings.
In Hindsight
The Annual Joint Lion of the Year Dinner was held at the New Brunswick Chateau; Lion Ed Lawson was awarded the Lion of the Year for 2004. This was Lion Ed’s second Lion of the Year Award, and the Club’s first two-time awardee.
The 2004-2005 Officer Slate and final vote was completed in May; the members new Board of Directors can be seen on the Jargon Banner, above. At present, we do not have a Tail Twister or a Lion Tamer; anyone interested in either of these Board positions should contact President Walt.
The Sixth Annual Golf Outing, chaired by Lion Doug Pearce, was held, for the first time, at the Peddie Golf Course. The Club raised approximately $5000.
This year’s Annual Super 50/50, chaired by Lion

As most of you know, Lion Rich Pape is the recipient of a couple of new hips. He had his surgery in June and spent most of June and July in recuperation. He is fine now and will be back to the meetings on a regular basis in September.
One place where Lion Rich was especially missed was our
fifth annual Trenton Thunder 50/50 on
We are on our Summer Schedule. A reminder: there is only one meeting if August, on the third Wednesday (8/18), and the summer schedule allows a more relaxed “dress code”, including shorts.
The tentative speaker planned for our August meeting has,
unfortunately, advised that he cannot speak this month. If a new speaker cannot
be scheduled before the meeting, we will begin our Member Interactive program a
month early and our topic will be “The Greatest Experience of Your Life”. With
the full understanding that the birth of your first – or any – child is right
up there, if that’s your greatest experience, please tell us about the “next
greatest” experience. Please keep in mind that these Interactive Discussions
have been planned to help us get to know more about our fellow Lions and to
further help our total interaction as a Club through the friendship and
camaraderie that can come from these discussions. Our Interactive Member
Discussion Topics for September will either be a continuation of the
aforementioned topic, or will be our next topic…”Your Greatest Career
Achievement”. The September topic will be announced in the next Jargon. Members
are encouraged to suggest topics for these discussions; please give your suggestions
to President Walt, Lion Frank Marlowe, or Lion
Usually our Club
Picnic is held in July, but due to a full calendar at the Cranbury Swim
Club, The Fifth Annual Lions Club Picnic will be held at the Cranbury Swim Club
on Saturday, August 7, from
The Cranbury Recreation Department’s Fun Night in the Park Program has been an enormous success
this summer, and the Cranbury Lions have been there to help, while using the
event to do some fundraising. Lion Joe Addonizio has brought our Ice Cream Cart
to these Thursday night events and has sold ice cream, soda and popcorn, at the
movies and concerts. The Club would like to thank Lion Joe, and the Lions that have
assisted him, for their efforts in doing this service for the community.
Unfortunately, Lion Joe can’t be at the Park for the last two events (8/5 and
8/12), but President Walt will bring the cart to the park. He could use a few
hands, so anyone who can get away for a couple of hours, or would like a to see
a movie (the 8/5 movie is “Best in Show”), or would just like a nice evening in
the park can volunteer by contacting President Walt and let him know you’ll be
there. In case of inclement weather, the events are relocated to the

The
Board of Directors has designated the second meeting in September (9/15) as
“Bring –A-Guest” Night. All Cranbury Lions are encouraged to bring a guest –
and a potential member – to the meeting. While reservations are not required,
if you plan to bring someone, we ask that you please advise Lion
Reminders
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years
now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings
each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 12 speakers
per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone
interesting on a regular basis. When you
do, or if you have any
suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank
will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.
It is important that we increase our fundraising capability
without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With
over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the
easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to
bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another
member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency,
should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members
may be notified.
Ed Lawson (5 S. Main) / Max Mesner (Rossmoor)
Lion Dennis Kennedy
will be the “permanent” pick up driver for Lion Ed
Lion Frank Marlowe will be the “permanent” pick up Driver for Lion Max
Lion Joe Addonizio
has volunteered to be the “permanent” back-up driver for both
Drivers: if you cannot make your pick-up, and/or if you
switch (or need to switch) with someone else, please notify Rick Cusworth as
soon as possible. Riders: please notify the assigned driver if you’re not going
to make a meeting.
