Apparently, there was a major foul-up with the Jargon for the last two months. Let me explain. The electronic edition goes out via AOL; without going into the technical aspects, a few months ago, AOL changed its system and how it dealt with both file and transmission compression. Consequently, nearly everyone was unable to open the October and November issues of the Jargon. The October snail mail version was inadvertently sent out by the publisher from a wrong file and regular mail recipients received the October 2000 Jargon; the Publisher apologizes for this oversight. Due to a glitch in the AOL system, the Publisher never received the November snail mail version. This (current) issue may also have some glitches. But AOL has assured me that the January edition should be readable by all. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.
The Annual Pancake Breakfast was this past Sunday, December 2nd, and we are proud to report it was one of the most financially successful Breakfasts in years! We believe that this was due in part to our new signage, hanging over Main Street, which produced quite a few walk-ins. Thanks to Lion Walt Caldwell for obtaining the sign. Of course, one of the other reasons was our new Picture with Santa Program which produced nearly $400 in revenue. We would like to thank our photographer, Lion Jim Gerberich, and of course, Santa and his Elves Lions Roy Reinhardt, Paul Mucciarone, and Richard Stannard.
We would also like to give a special Attaboy to the Pancake Breakfast Clean-up Crew; the word from School officials is that the cafeteria and the kitchen have never been so sparkling clean!
This, unfortunately, segues into a problem that needs to be addressed. A number of Lions did not show up for their Pancake Breakfast assignment, nor did they call to advise that they would be unable to make it. This caused a serious manpower shortage in the kitchen and on clean-up. Manpower is our most important commodity. If you cannot make an assignment, in the future, please get someone to either switch with you or fill in for you, and notify the Event Chair.
The Toys for Tots Program is in full swing! We have four collection points this year: 1st Constitution Bank (Village Office), PNC Bank, The Cranbury Post Office, and Princeton Lightwave (on Route 130). At this printing we have already delivered 3 large bags full of toys to the Marines and the collection boxes are filling up again. We ask that EVERY member to donate at least one toy to the program. Thank you all for the support.
The Cranbury Lions Annual Holiday Party will be on Friday, December 14, 2001, at the Doral Forestall. Tickets are $17.50 for Members and $32.50 for guests. There will be a cash bar cocktail hour from 7PM 8PM, followed by a buffet dinner, dancing to a DJ until 11PM, and, back by popular demand karaoke. This years promises to be at least as much fun as last year, so we hope to see you all there.
The Committee for the Todd Beamer Memorial has finalized the basic plans for the memorial, which will have two parts. With coordination from the Cranbury Parks Department, we will install the first part of the memorial in Heritage Park. This monument (for lack of a better word, please) will consist of a simple boulder into which we will imbed a bronze plaque; and behind, next to or otherwise near the boulder, we will plant an oak tree. Whatever donated funds remain, or continue to come in, will be invested into The Todd Beamer Scholarship Fund, which will be administered by the Cranbury Lions. An annual scholarship will be awarded to a Cranbury 12th grade graduate moving on as a matriculated college freshman. As more detailed plans are formulated, they will be reported here.
Scout Troop 52 will be going on a ski trip on Sunday February 3, 2002. Since we are their sponsor, we have been invited to go. Lift tickets for the day will be half price. Anyone wishing to go can contact Joe Carroll before January 27.
The Staff of the Jargon and the Board of Directors wishes all the Cranbury Lions, our advertisers and, Lions and non-Lions everywhere a Safe, Healthy and Happy Holiday Season.
Reminders
Many of you have e-mail capability, but are still receiving The Jargon via regular mail. Please notify the Editor of your e-mail address by phone or via e-mail at BobV@cranbury.org. Your e-mail address will not be distributed outside of the Club, and will only be used for The Jargon and other necessary Club business. Your participation in this program benefits all of us. Thank you.
Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or a members family, or any other similar incident or emergency should contact Bob Virgadamo to activate the phone tree, so that all members may be notified.
Lets help our Program Chair, Frank Marlowe. We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis; when you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call.
Advertising has become a major fundraiser, and fundraising is everyones responsibility. Please provide a helping hand by directing all advertising leads to Lion Bob Virgadamo on-line at BobV@cranbury.org.
