Welcome to our two newest Members – Jeff Grundy and Glenn Johnson.
Lion Rick Cusworth’s wife, Karen, has been diagnosed with
breast cancer. It's not a secret - a lot of people already know. Rick
would like us to know that while it is cancer and it is serious, Karen's
prognosis is good. He would also like us to know, however, that because she's
going to be feeling poorly for next few months his general availability toward
his Lions duties will vary accordingly. Everyone in the Club wishes Karen a
speedy recovery.
Our Interactive Member Discussion Topic scheduled for November 17th has yet to be determined. All Members are asked to suggest topics for future discussions; please give your suggestions to President Walt, or Lion Frank Marlowe.
District Governor Al Brewer visited with us at our October 6th meeting and personally recognized and thanked the Cranbury Lions with twenty years or more of service. He then gave an interesting presentation on LCIF, and the many ways that “local donations” come back to help Lions locally; of the many examples cited were the new District 16D Eye-mobile and the donations given to help local victims of 9-11. We would like to thank Governor Al for taking the time to visit with us.
Like any organization, the Cranbury Lions must evolve to
reflect the times in which we live; among the many things that show this…the
Jargon is on-line, Website advertising is a primary fundraiser, a golf outing
has “replaced” the turkey dinner, broom sales are quaintly archaic and barely
remembered, and our members are given a choice as to how they may dress when
they attend regular meetings. The Cranbury Lions has a “dress code” which
follows the dress code recommended by
Lions International; it is important to note that Lions International does not
have a dress code standard, nor has any dress code ever been written
into the International By-Laws. Traditionally, members of the Cranbury Lions
have always been required to wear business attire to our “regular” bi-monthly
meetings. Lions International, in 1998, recommended that (
At 6PM on October 31st, in spite of the great
weather, scores of Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins, Witches ‘n’ Warriors, Dinosaurs and
Dancers, arrived at the school gymnasium for the Annual Halloween Party, hosted
by “old Abe” himself, Lion Richard Stannard. Both children and adults, alike,
were treated to feats of prestidigitation from our young magician, George
Murray III, who, for the third year in a row, volunteered to entertain. This
year the 15-year old magician amazed us all by “disappearing” from a locked bag,
and reappearing from behind the crown of on-lookers. Bravo, George! We’d like
to thank Lion Richard and his Committee for making the event special for all
the kids, with special thanks to Mary Reilly for her usual hand at registration.
And of course, a laurel and hardy handshake goes to Lion Bill Keller and his
crew for providing and serving the cider and donuts and Lion Roy Reinhardt for
providing the pumpkins and other decorations.
Our
Annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser will be on December 5th. Co-Chairs
We
have already begun working with the US Marines for this year’s ‘Toys for Tots’
Drive. You can expect to see boxes and barrels go out at the usual locations
within the next few weeks. The actual locations will be announced shortly.
The Cranbury Lions Club is in search of new fund raisers – different, entertaining, and fun. Some excellent ideas have been presented, among which are an antique car rally, a Halloween party, a casino night and Bingo. Any member who has a fundraising idea should share the idea with President Walt. The list of potential fundraisers will be discussed at a Board of Directors meeting, and presented to the membership at a regular meeting.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – The Club needs a Chairman and Co-Chairman for
the Spring Raffle; we also need to know who will be interested in holding a can
for the White Cane Days. All interested members, should please contact
President Walt, ASAP.
Reminders
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years
now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings
each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 12 speakers
per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone
interesting on a regular basis. When you
do, or if you have any
suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank
will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.
It is important that we increase our fundraising capability
without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With
over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the
easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to
bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another
member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency,
should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members
may be notified.

Lion Dennis Kennedy
will be the “permanent” pick up driver for Lion Ed
Lion Frank Marlowe has volunteered to be the “permanent” back-up driver.
Drivers: if you cannot make your pick-up, or need to switch, please notify Rick Cusworth as soon as possible. Riders: please notify the assigned driver if you’re not going to make a meeting.
