Member Interactive: Experience with Anyone Famous
The Annual Boys Scout meeting, normally held the first Wednesday in February has been postponed until the second February Meeting on February 18th.
We’d like to thank the many people who participated in our Super Bowl Pool, the proceeds of which are used to bolster our Administrative budget. The Pool winners were: 1st quarter ($50), Janine Agostino of Marlboro; double congratulations to Marty Coffee, of Cranbury, for winning both Half ($100) and the third quarter ($50). And finally for that hair raising fourth quarter where Dave Cook thought he had it, but lost to Mike Kaiser, who lost to Don Herr’s Sylvia, who then lost to Don Herr, but he lost it to Dave Stout, who lost it to Sylvia again, but as we all know, the last few seconds provided a final score change, and the $300 win went to Tom Hagerty, of Cranbury. Congratulations to all our winners.
The Interactive Member Discussion Topic for February is our last scheduled Hobby Night, when we will hear from Lions Bill Keller and Alex Johnson. Our Interactive Member Discussion Topic for March is scheduled to be “Experiences With Anyone Famous”. If you have spoken with, drank with, partied with, or just plain bumped into any famous person, we would like to hear your experience. 2-5 minutes per member should do it. (The Editor apologizes for the misprint in last month’s Jargon advising that this latter topic was scheduled for February)
As we all know, the Club voted to save at least one of the Updike barns. The Club notified the Township, in writing, that we would be interested in refurbishing at least one of the barns on the Updike property and then use it for our storage needs. The Township Committee has, in turn, given the Cranbury Lions Club a “Letter of Intent”, advising that as soon as the property is actually deeded over to the Township, they will turn the barn over to the Lions. As President Ray told the Cranbury Press: “Preserving the potato barn is an important project that will not only benefit Cranbury by preserving an historical structure right in the village (at no cost to the Town), but will provide the Lions Club with a building to house over 75 years of equipment that we use to serve the community. The commitment of the Township Committee allows the Club to plan the project over the winter. Hopefully by the spring the Township will own the property, and the club can start the actual restoration.” Updates will be placed in the Jargon as the project moves forward.
In preparation of this project, the Board is trying to determine what our storage needs are, exactly. Every member who has any stored paraphernalia – the float, signs, boxes of records, historical documents, pancake breakfast equipment…anything – should contact Lion Bob Virgadamo or Lion Mike Kaiser, so proper planning can be done.

The Board of Directors is still working with the School Board to obtain a location for a display case for the Club’s historic memorabilia. When the display case is finally installed, the Board has voted to dedicate it to the memory of Lion Mason Blaich, who stored the historic items in his home for nearly a quarter of a century.
Mason’s family has donated $10,000 to the Club, in his name, to be placed as we see the need. Of course, a letter of thanks has been sent.
Mason was the Chairman of our Health and Welfare Committee, which leaves us with a vacancy. The Club is looking for two Members to fill these openings, preferably two retired Members, since in addition to getting cards and flowers, the committee members make hospital visits, as necessary. Any interested members should please contact President Ray.
We have now received dates for our annual visits to the
Trenton Thunder. The Thunder have, once again, granted us a spot on their 50/50
calendar. The game is Thunder v. Mets on
Reminders
Please remember that the Coupon Collection Project is still active. Please deliver your cut manufacturer’s coupons to Lion Chris Thompson at the meetings (or to Lion Bob Virgadamo, if Chris is unavailable), or drop them off to one of the collection boxes in the Library or the Town Hall. Remember that this very worthwhile project will cost each of us a mere 10-15 minutes per week. And, let us not forget that these coupons are being collected to help military families overseas, and that “We Serve”.
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our bi-monthly meetings. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding speakers that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.
It is important that we increase our fundraising capability
without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With
over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the
easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to
bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions
Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.

Lion Dennis Kennedy has volunteered to be the “permanent” pick-up driver for Lion Ed

Lion Frank Marlowe has volunteered to act as the “regular” pick up driver for Lion Max, but additional volunteers are necessary for this pick-up. Please contact Lion Rick Cusworth to be placed on his list.
If you cannot make your pick-up, and/or if you switch (or need to switch) with someone else, please notify Lion Rick as soon as possible. Riders: please notify the assigned driver if you’re not going to make a meeting.
