Things To Know

Congratulations to our newest Lion, Pat Meehan.

The Slate of Officers and Directors for the 2005-2006 Lion Year was voted on at the May 4^th meeting, and unanimously approved by the Membership. Congratulations to President Alex and his Cabinet. Installation of Officers will take place at the Installation Dinner Dance/Meeting at Good Time Charlie’s Restaurant on Friday, June 17, 2005. A sign-up sheet for reservation and meal choice will continue to be circulated at the June 1^st meting, or you can call e-mail your reservation into Lion Bob V. Reservation deadline is June 9.

The Cranbury Lions 7^th Annual Golf Outing, at the Peddie Golf Course was held on Monday, May 16, 2005. With 74 golfers and 62 Hole Sponsors, this was one of our most successful Golf Outings to date, raising over $6300. Congratulations and many thanks to Lion Doug Pearce and his dedicated committee (Lions Walt Caldwell, Ray Dickey, Jon Goldstein, and Bob Virgadamo), and a special thanks to Lion Don Herr for his usual sales performance for both golfers and hole sponsors.

The Annual Student Awards Meeting was held on June 1^st, and President Walt and Lion Mike Kaiser, Chairman of the Student Affairs Committee, presented this year’s awards to:

The Cranbury Lions Barn Project is finally coming together. Project Chairman Lion Mike Kaiser has met with the Township, and negotiations are nearly complete for the buildings to be placed into the Club’s care through a “long-term lease” situation. Barring any additional delays from the Township, Lion Mike expects that work on the project will begin shortly. More information will follow.

A giant Attaboy! to Lion Henry Behnke for his efforts as Chairman of the Raffle Committee for making this year’s Super 50/50 Spring Raffle one of our most successful raffles, ever, with a net profit to the Club of $4082.50. A huge round of thanks to all members for your efforts towards ticket sales, and especially to Lions Dennis Kennedy, Don Herr, and Mahlon Thompson, who collectively sold approximately 250 tickets! Congratulations to the three winners: Lion Judson Hagerty, Ms. Sharon Dredger, and Lion Larry Leson.

The Club would like to express its appreciation to Lion Richard Stannard, who represented us at the Cranbury School’s Drug Free Fair on Saturday, May 14^th, 2005, with a special thanks to Lion Doug Pearce and the lovely Jodi, for stopping by to lend a hand. Perhaps we can get a volunteer or two more next year…

A laurel and hardy handshake to Lion Bob Wood and his staff of volunteers for another fine Memorial Day Parade, with a nod to Lions Doug Pearce and Bob Virgadamo, for the float (which carried President Walt and lovely Jodi and was excellently prepared and decorated) and the Post-Parade Ceremony, respectively. This year’s winners of the Decorated Bike/Trike Contest were: Twins Megan and Morgan Mavoides (tie), Abbey Sekely, and Eleanor Whaley. The Float Contest Winner was the Cranbury Historical Society.

Our annual Cranbury/Hightstown Joint Meeting on May 25, 2005, was, as usual, enjoyed by all, as the respective Clubs went through our interrelated histories. For those that may have missed the meeting, the Cranbury Club sponsored the Hightstown Club in 1936, and we have been active together ever since. Thanks to Presidents Walt and Paul (Cousineau) for setting up this interesting evening.

Every year, District 16D volunteers to help with the eye program at the Special Olympics. This annual event will be held on June 3, 4, & 5, 2005 (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday) at the College of New Jersey in Ewing Township. Set-up will take place on Friday; Saturday is the busy day for registration and check-ups, Sunday is the closing day. Refreshments will be provided by the local ShopRite supermarket. The Special Olympics allows physically/mentally challenged individuals to compete in a variety of athletic events. The ages of participants range from 8 to mid-forties. As part of the event, there is a health center that allows professionals to examine the athletes for a variety of health issues. Lions International and Special Olympics developed a program called Special Olympics/ Lions International Opening Eyes Program, where the athlete’s eyes are examined for a range of functions. Our part is to help set up (on Friday), give exams, register the Olympians, assist in helping select frames, take eye glass prescriptions to Lens Crafters for preparation, and ensure the Olympians receive the glasses. All Lions and non-Lions are invited to volunteer for a flexible number of hours or days for the event. If you can make the time to help in this worthwhile effort, please advise President Walt or Lions Tom Reilly or Bob Virgadamo, ASAP.

Our Annual Trenton Thunder 50/50 Fundraiser, will be on Friday evening, June 24, 2005 at a game between the Thunder and the Reading Phillies. This is a good “rivalry” game, and with enough volunteers selling tickets in the park, we can raise quite a bit on this 50/50. The more ticket sellers we have, the more tickets we can sell; Cranbury Lions may bring anyone over 18 to sell tickets. Entry into the stadium is free; the Club provides each ticket seller with a hot dog and a beverage; and, while you raise money for the community, you get to watch a baseball game. A sign-up sheet is being circulated at the regular meetings, or you can call Lion Bob Virgadamo.

The Annual Club Picnic is being planned for mid- to late July at the Cranbury Swim Club; Lion Joe Carroll has again agreed to Chair this event, and will provide information shortly. All members who wish to “get a jump” on the sign-up or can help with B-B-Q duties should contact Lion Joe

Our Annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Game Outing will be Saturday, August 27^th, between the Thunder (Yankees) and the Binghamton Mets. We have limited seating, on the first base side, but can add tickets if our allotment sells out early enough. It is NOT too early to reserve these tickets. And remember, the tickets are available to all Lions, their families, friends and neighbors. For reservations, contact Lion Bob Virgadamo.

There has been a severe drop off in meeting attendance. Members are reminded that our meetings are necessary as a means of disseminating information, obtaining a volunteer corps, and maintaining an esprit de corps among our membership. The Board realizes that there are other “time demands”, especially among our younger members, but asks that every effort be made to make the meetings.

Reminders

Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 20 speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.

The Cranbury Lions Club is in search of new fund raisers – different, entertaining, and fun. Some excellent ideas have been presented, among which are an antique car rally, a Halloween party, a casino night, Bingo, an art auction, a cruise, and a marathon; the Board of Directors would appreciate input from our membership on these ideas. Any member who has a fundraising idea should share the idea with President Walt. The list of potential fundraisers, and the input from interested Lions, will be discussed at a Board of Directors meeting, and presented to the general membership at a regular meeting.

It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Ray Dickey, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Frank Marlowe (Chair, H&W) and/or Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.
