Things To Know

Congratulations to Lion Tom Reilly, who was named Lion of the Year at the Awards Dinner held on April 27. Lion Tom was given this honor for his volunteer spirit and his efforts both within the Club and as the Regional Chair for Region 4 for the last three years.

In addition to awarding the Lion of the Year, Cranbury Lions Alex Johnson, Frank Marlowe, and Peter Turner were each honored and awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship. The Melvin Jones Award is the highest awards an individual Lion can receive for humanitarian service to the community, and we would like to say congratulations to the three honorees.

Lion Bob Virgadamo announced to the Zone Clubs at the Joint Lion of the Year Dinner that he has “thrown his hat into the ring” and will run for Vice-Governor for the 2006-07 Lion Year; a resolution will be drafted and presented at next year’s State Convention. If elected, Lion Bob will be Vice-Governor as we celebrate our Club’s 75^th Anniversary in June 2007, and will be District Governor during our 75^th Year (2007-08). If elected, he will be the fifth District Governor from Cranbury and the first since Jim Paul in 1992. Assuming a positive election to the position, there is, of course, some time before any of this happens, however, any Cranbury Lion who would like to be considered for a position on the District Governor’s Cabinet can speak with Lion Bob at any time.

The first reading of the Slate of Officers and Directors for the 2005-2006 Lion Year was at the April 6^th meeting. The final reading of the will be at the next Regular Business meeting on May 4. While the Nominating Committee has attempted to select a “well-rounded” slate, write-in ballots may be added to the slate, as it is passed among the members at the regular meetings. President Walt will ask for a vote for the slate following the second reading. For your information and convenience, a copy of the Slate of Officers and Directors appears at the end of this month’s newsletter.

The Student Affairs Committee extended the cutoff for applications for the Doc Tudor and Todd Beamer Scholarships, the Stan Thomas Award, and the World Affairs Seminar to April 22. The recipients of this year’s awards are:

The Cranbury Lions Barn Project is finally coming together. Project Chairman Lion Mike Kaiser has met with the Township, and negotiations are underway for the buildings to be placed into the Club’s care through a “long-term lease” situation, and these negotiations are expected to be concluded shortly. Barring any additional delays from the Township, Lion Mike expects that work on the project will begin shortly. More information will follow.

This year’s White Cane Days were held on April 29 & 30, and a laurel and hardy handshake goes to Committee Co-Chairs, Lion Mahlon Thompson and Lion Andre Mento, who have advised that, after expenses, we raised $570; “expenses” were for new signs, since our old ones were 30+ years old and in dire need of replacement). The Board of Directors would like to thank all the members who spent a few hours shaking the can.

All members should have received their Super 50/50 Spring Raffle tickets by now; if you have not, please contact Lion Henry Behnke ASAP. As one of our largest (and oldest) fundraisers, each member is asked to sell every ticket they receive, and make every possible effort to sell additional tickets. Volunteers will be needed, by the Raffle Committee, to sell tickets along Main Street during the Memorial Day Parade. A sign-up sheet will be circulating at the meetings during May.

Saturday, May 14^th, 2005 is the Cranbury School’s Drug Free Fair. We will have a game booth there, and Lion Richard Stannard will need a few volunteers to help with the kids. A sign-up sheet will be at the May 4^th Meeting, or call Lion Richard or President Walt to volunteer.

Monday, May 16, 2005 marks the date of the Cranbury Lions 7^th Annual Golf Outing, at the Peddie Golf Course in Hightstown. The $125 per player, includes cart and greens fees, lunch and dinner, team and individual prizes for play, door prizes, auction items and a registration gift. The event starts with lunch at 11:30, followed by a 1PM Shotgun Start. Spouses and non-golfing Lions may attend the dinner for $30; both lunch and dinner includes choice of beer or wine at the open bar. Beverages will be sold, at a nominal charge, from a cart on the course throughout the day…the cart driver will try not to get lost this year! We’re down to the deadline on this event: Hole Sponsors MUST be in and golfers must be registered by May 7^th.

The Memorial Day Parade will be upon us soon, and Lions Bob Wood and Doug Pearce will need volunteers for Parade Day and for the float, respectively. A sign up sheet will be circulating at the meetings, and volunteers are need as Bicycle Judges, Strolling 50/50 Sellers, Traffic Control and Participant Guides, and of course, Float Fixers. C’mon…you’re at the Parade anyway – please sign up for one of these fairly simple, very necessary jobs.

Thanks to the efforts of President Walt and Hightstown Lions President Paul Cousineau, our annual Cranbury/Hightstown Joint Meeting has been set for May 25, 2005, at the Masonic Lodge (downstairs) in Hightstown. Historically, we have alternated hosting duties, and this year it is the Hightstown’s turn to host us, so we are on their schedule (2^nd & 4^th Wednesday). As in the past, the joint meeting will use an interactive discussion format. Presidents Walt and Paul have considered that a discussion of Club histories would be interesting, and have asked their respective Club Historians to provide a short history for each Club. A sign-up sheet will be circulated at our May 4^th meeting. All Cranbury Lions are encouraged to attend, so if you miss the sheet, contact President Walt.

Every year, District 16D volunteers to help with the eye program at the Special Olympics. This annual event will be held on June 3, 4, & 5, 2005 (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday) at the College of New Jersey in Ewing Township. Set-up will take place on Friday; Saturday is the busy day for registration and check-ups, Sunday is the closing day. Refreshments will be provided by the local ShopRite supermarket. The Special Olympics allows physically/mentally challenged individuals to compete in a variety of athletic events. The ages of participants range from 8 to mid-forties. As part of the event, there is a health center that allows professionals to examine the athletes for a variety of health issues. Lions International and Special Olympics developed a program called Special Olympics/ Lions International Opening Eyes Program, where the athlete’s eyes are examined for a range of functions. Our part is to help set up (on Friday), give exams, register the Olympians, assist in helping select frames, take eye glass prescriptions to Lens Crafters for preparation, and ensure the Olympians receive the glasses. All Lions and non-Lions are invited to volunteer for a flexible number of hours or days for the event. If you can make the time to help in this worthwhile effort, please advise President Walt or Lions Tom Reilly or Bob Virgadamo; or use the sign-up sheet circulating at the meetings.

Mark you calendars for the two dates of our annual Trenton Thunder Baseball fundraiser and Club Outing:

While it may be a bit early for us to ask for volunteers for the Trenton Thunder 50/50 Fundraiser, we hope that many of you will consider coming to Riverside Stadium to help sell 50/50 tickets. The more ticket sellers we have, the more tickets we can sell; Cranbury Lions may bring anyone over 18 to sell tickets. Entry into the stadium is free; the Club provides each ticket seller with a hot dog and a beverage; and, while you raise money for the community, you get to watch a baseball game. We have been given a Friday night game (7:05) for this fundraiser, between the Thunder and the Reading Phillies, on June 24, 2005. This is a good “rivalry” game, and with enough volunteers selling tickets in the park, we can raise quite a bit on this 50/50. Additional information will be announced at the regular meetings, or you can call Lion Bob Virgadamo.

Our Annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Game Outing will be Saturday, August 27^th, between the Thunder (Yankees) and the Binghamton Mets. We have limited seating, on the first base side, but can add tickets if our allotment sells out early enough. It is NOT too early to reserve these tickets. And remember, the tickets are available to all Lions, their families, friends and neighbors. For reservations, contact Lion Bob Virgadamo.

At the last District 16D Cabinet Meeting we learned about the following projects by other Clubs in our Zone: The South Brunswick Lions is sponsoring the Cole Bros. Circus on May 21 & 22, and will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner on June 3^rd; for South Brunswick information call Jack Hendrickson at 732-297-1107. The East Brunswick Club will be having a Golf Outing at the Bunker Hill Golf Course on June 1^st; for East Brunswick info, contact Lion Lou Samaro. All Cranbury Lions are encouraged to support the activities and projects of other Lions Clubs, especially in our Zone.

There has been a severe drop off in meeting attendance. Members are reminded that our meetings are necessary as a means of disseminating information, obtaining a volunteer corps, and maintaining an esprit de corps among our membership. The Board realizes that there are other “time demands”, especially among our younger members, but asks that every effort be made to make the meetings.

Reminders

Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our meetings each month. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 20 speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com . Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.

The Cranbury Lions Club is in search of new fund raisers – different, entertaining, and fun. Some excellent ideas have been presented, among which are an antique car rally, a Halloween party, a casino night, Bingo, an art auction, a cruise, and a marathon; the Board of Directors would appreciate input from our membership on these ideas. Any member who has a fundraising idea should share the idea with President Walt. The list of potential fundraisers, and the input from interested Lions, will be discussed at a Board of Directors meeting, and presented to the general membership at a regular meeting.

It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Ray Dickey, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Frank Marlowe (Chair, H&W) and/or Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.
