December 4 Regular Meeting 7PM, Cranbury Station, Dinner: Sliced London Broil
Speaker: Tony Bianculli of Rocky Hill NJ, a railroad historian, will discuss the role of railroads on US postage stamps. His talk is based on a book written by Mr. Bianculli, soon to be published.
December 13 Holiday Party/Meeting 7PM for cocktails; The Bog Restaurant; 8PM, Dinner
Buffet; Dancing in lieu of Speaker.
Please welcome our newest Lions Richard Cusworth, Christine Thompson, and Peter Turner.
We would like to acknowledge the members of our Club who have contributed to the community as Cranbury Lions for a quarter of a century or more. At this time we would like to acknowledge and congratulate Lions Mason Blaich (25), Bill Eller (40), Do Jo Swanagan (40), John Bloom (45), and Dick West (45). Thank you, fellow Lions, for all your years of service.
The Annual Childrens Halloween Party, held at the Cranbury School, was a regular hit, especially due to our surprise guest, George Murray III. George is a twelve-year old with a magic act that delighted the youngsters, and amazed the adults. As usual, the costumes were cute and scary, and prizes were given to the winners in each age category. A laurel and hardy handshake to Lions Richard Stannard, Roy Reinhardt, Bob Wood, and all the Lions who came out to give them a hand with sign-up, judging and refreshments.
The Pancake Breakfast is coming up fast, and the Committee Co-Chairs are rapidly preparing for the event, which will take place on Sunday, December 8th in the Cranbury School Cafeteria. In the very near future, each member will get their tickets to sell for the Pancake Breakfast, as well as their assignment. And, like last year, Santa will be there for photo opportunities.
The Holiday Party will be at The Bog Restaurant on Friday, December 13, 2002. The sign-up sheet has already begun to go around and we were all pretty happy to see that attendance will be high. Music for listening and dancing will be provided by DJ Fred Campbell, and unless we have a huge influx of Japanese members within the next month, karaoke will be kept to a minimum, so as not to conflict with dancing. Cocktails will begin at 7PM, Dinner Buffet at 8PM. As usual we will try to keep the costs to approximately $25 per person, and will let the Members know the actual cost as soon as possible.
We have made arrangements with the Optical Department at Costco to collect any old eyeglasses that are left there. We have done this with the permission of the District Governor, and will cease doing the pick-ups if any of the local Clubs decide to take over the responsibility.
For the information of any member that was not at the November 6th meeting: because we have so many fundraisers and other activities in the Spring and through the Summer, the Board of Directors has voted to move our White Cane Days Fundraiser from its historical slot in late April/early May to early October. This years White Cane will take place on October 10-11, 2003.
And speaking of fundraising we are a Club in search of a winter fundraiser. We would like to provide Cranbury with something to beat the February Doldrums, while at the same time raising money for our charities. However, since we do not want to appear that we are going to the same well too often, this fund raiser must be something that gives Cranbury residents some bang for their buck. If any member has any ideas or suggestions that fits the criteria, please contact Lions Bob Virgadamo, Andy Jost, Walt Caldwell or Rich Stannard..
Please Mark Your Calendars: The Board of Directors has arranged for an Inter-Club meeting with the Hightstown Lions Club on February 26, 2003. The meeting will be hosted by the Hightstown Club at their regular meeting place in the Masonic Hall. Traditionally, their second February meeting is Hobby Night, where anyone with an interesting hobby may stand up and speak for a few minutes; District Governor Earl Grondyke has advised that we would be welcome to participate in his Clubs Hobby Night program.
In Memoriam
Bob Perrine 1920-2002 Bob joined the Cranbury Lions in 1961
Tom Gambino 1944-2002 Tom joined the Cranbury Lions in 1992.
Reminders
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our bi-monthly meetings. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding 20 speakers per year that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com .
The Phone Tree has a new chairperson: Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a members family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the phone tree, so that all members may be notified.
PLEASE NOTE: Our regular meeting schedule will be interrupted, TEMPORARILY, in January 2003. January 1st is the First Wednesday. For the month of January 2003, ONLY, our Meeting Schedule will be the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays January 8th and 22nd. The Board will meet on January 7th.
