leadership seminar at the University of Wisconsin. He will give a report of his experience and show pictures that he took.

Interactive Member Discussion – Topic: Hobbies, Part 2 – The last Hobby night was

well received and because time ran out for the many Members who wished to speak, a

second Hobby Night has been added.

Speakers: Harry Kleinkauf – Chief Kleinkauf, who will retire from the Cranbury Police Department at the end of this year, will give us an update on things going on in the department, including the new police station, and possibly make some observations about his career with the Cranbury Police.

Things To Know

Welcome to our newest Members, Jerry Hanson, Paul Hayden, and Larry Leson.

The Board of Directors has updated and revised the Club’s Constitution and By-Laws. The By-Laws had not been changed since 1976, and were somewhat antiquated. For those members who receive this via e-mail, there is a file attachment of the new By-Laws; for those who receive the Jargon in the mail, the revision follows the Advertiser section. A membership vote on the revised Constitution and By-Laws will take place at the November 19 meeting.

The Interactive Member Discussion Topic for October was on “Hobbies”. Lion Judson Hagerty brought in two of his hand-made dollhouses, and spoke about how he built and furnished them; Lion Judson also touched briefly on another hobby of his, collecting Lions pins; he will bring a portion of his collection to another meeting and discuss that hobby. Our members were so interested in Judson’s hobby that his talk, and related questions, took the entire allotted time, and since there are additional members who would like to talk about their hobbies, it was decided that there would be a second hobby night in November to allow these members to speak for a few minutes on their hobbies. Kudos to Lion Frank Marlowe who directed the format for this new program form, and for making it interesting to all those who attended. All members are encouraged to participate in these discussions. The December discussion will be “replaced” by Member interaction at our Holiday Meeting and Dinner Dance.

The Coupon Collection Project is in full swing! Please deliver your cut manufacturer’s coupons to Lion Chris Thompson at the meetings (or to Lion Bob Virgadamo, if Chris is unavailable), or drop them off to one of the collection boxes in the Library or the Town Hall. Remember that this very worthwhile project will cost each of us a mere 10-15 minutes per week. And, let us not forget that these coupons are being collected to help military families overseas and that “We Serve”.

Our Annual Children’s Halloween Party took place at the Cranbury School on Friday, October 31. As usual, this was a wonderful little event, and the kids were adorable. We were able to procure the services of young Mr. George Murray III who provided a magic show that entranced both children and adults, alike. George is only 13 and is already a great showman; if you missed his act this year, we will try to have him again next year; his feats of prestidigitation and levitation are well worth seeing. Due to the warm weather on Halloween, most of the kids were out ‘Trick or Treating’, so turnout was lower than usual, however, we were able to give prizes to all the children that attended. The Costume Parade, once again led by the lovely Katie Stannard, produced “Honorable Mention” prizes that went to Morgan and Megan Maroides (sp?), Jack and Drew Staples, Timmy Yesalavage (sp?) and Rebecca Saul, in the pre-school group; Paige McGuire, Brittany Hidalgo, and Hayden Reyes in grades K&1; Alden Reyes, Wally Allikas, Tim Brennan, and Emily Toplin for grades 2&3; Derek Colaizzo and Reed Devany in the 4th&5th grade group; and, Guy Blackburn in the 6th grade to adult group. A loud Lion roar of thanks to our Master of Ceremonies, the startlingly scary Lion Richard Stannard, and his equally frightening band of volunteers, including perennial snack servers and donut donators Lions Monty Hagerty and Rich Pape, who were in turn assisted by their winsome wives, or as Lion Rich has observed, we had a pair of Papes and a Full Monty.

The Board of Directors suggested a new Community Service Project, which was ratified by a vote of the membership at the first meeting in October. The Cranbury Lions will be renovating at least one of the barns on the Updike Property (NOT to be confused with the barn that the Town may move to the Updike Property). This barn, once preserved, will act as our storage facility for the parade float, the ice cream cart, the griddle, all the signs for the golf outing, and the boxes of supplies for our fundraisers. It can (may) ultimately hold our archives, so that Lions George Smith, Mason Blaich, and Mahlon Thompson can reclaim some personal space by storing historical records in a “Club facility”.

Two years ago, the Club donated $2000 to the Cranbury Educational Foundation for their fundraising efforts toward the new Community Room; as a consideration for our donation, we were promised, at that time, that we would be able to use of the room for our Board of Director meetings, and that we could place a “trophy case” in the room to display our charter, the president’s plaque, the Stan Thomas plaque, our sponsorship plaques (Little League, et al), and other assorted historical memorabilia from the 30’s to the present. The room is now in use, and President Ray is working with the school to obtain the use of the Community Room, or some other room, and the trophy case. Lion Pete Turner is investigating trophy cases for size, function and cost.

The Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held on December 7, 2003. Co-Chairs Ed Lawson and George Smith have begun their preparations, which, this year will include an advertisement in the Cranbury Press about our ‘Pictures with Santa’ Service. Lion Joe Addonizio will man a separate table to sell Entertainment Books. Lion Ed will have the assignment list ready before the day of the breakfast. Lion Ed has chaired the breakfast for a few decades, now, and would like to step down. If any of our younger members would like to try and fill his shoes, please contact Lion Ed or President Ray.

Lion Bob Virgadamo has been trying to contact the U.S. Marines in Ewing, who operate and coordinate the Toys for Tots Program in this area. So far, he has not heard back from them, but anticipates a response. Assuming a response from the Marine Company, there will be boxes set up in the First Constitution Bank, PNC Bank and the Post Office, as in previous years. Lion Bob will keep the Members, as well as the rest of the town, informed through Lorraine Sedor’s weekly column.

In recent weeks, we have had a number of inquiries about whether the Multiple District would sponsor another Devil’s Hockey Game. President Ray just received word that there will be a NJ Multiple District 16 sponsored hockey game between the NJ Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday, December 12, 2003. Each ticket will be $35 (regular price $52), and $5 from each ticket will be donated back to our Club. Last year the Cranbury Lions led the State with 67 attendees, which netted a donation to the Club of $335. Anyone interested in attending this game should notify President Ray or Lion Bob Virgadamo of the number of tickets you would like. All reservations and payment (checks made out to ‘Cranbury Lions’) must be in no later than November 25, 2003.

The Cranbury Lions Holiday Meeting and Dinner Dance will be at the Bog Restaurant on Friday, December 19, 2003. The cash bar cocktail hour will begin at 7PM, followed by a buffet dinner with three main course choices, including a carving station. Our regular DJ, Fred Campbell, has retired to Florida, so we have contracted a new DJ – Ultimate Sounds DJ’s. After the dinner dance, Lion Bob Virgadamo would appreciate hearing you’re your comments on this new DJ. Reservations need to be made and confirmed in early December, so we will start a sign up sheet at the November 19^th meeting.

Reminders

Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our bi-monthly meetings. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding a year’s supply of speakers that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com. Additionally, Frank will take all members’ suggestions for interactive discussion nights.

It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Gene Buckley, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.

Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.

Don’t forget about our new Eyeglass Collection Box, at its new location in front of the Library.
