October 15 – Regular Meeting –
Interactive Member Discussion – Topic:
The first meeting in September means the normal Dress Code is back in effect – Please dress accordingly.
Fellow Lions, the first September meeting, September 3rd, has been designated “Spouse Night”, and for everyone’s enjoyment, Lion Frank Marlowe has gotten Local Master Gardener Norma Swale to come and regale us with useful garden tips for winterizing our gardens. As space is limited, reservations will be needed. Please sign your spouse up on the sheet going around at the August meeting, or contact Lion Bob Virgadamo before August 29.
Beginning September 2003, we will have only one formal speaker per month at one of our regular meetings; generally, we will try to have the speaker at the first monthly meeting. The second meeting will be a series of informal, no pressure discussions, among the members, on a topic that will be chosen at the monthly Board of Directors meeting, and reported here. Lion Peter Turner will lead the first Interactive Member Discussion this month, with a discussion on Public speaking. The October Discussion will be on “hobbies”. Future topics will include, careers, Military or some other Service to our Country, and many other interesting possibilities. This will be an opportunity for any member to speak about the topic, and for all members to get to know each other better, through these discussions. While the Board hopes that everyone will participate, participation is on a volunteer basis, only. In view of the diversity that our Club has in age and career categories, this will only help to solidify what is already a strong Club. Lion Frank Marlowe, who has been our Regular Meeting Program Chair for some time, now, has agreed to act as Moderator for the informal discussions.
Lion Christine Thompson has volunteered to Chair the Coupon Collection Project for the Club, and Lion Chris is working with Lorraine Sedor, who is coordinating the Scouting effort on this project. Remember that this very worthwhile project will cost each of us a mere 10-15 minutes each Sunday morning. We appeal to all Lions to (neatly) clip every manufacturer’s coupon from the Sunday paper, put them in an envelope and either bring them to the meetings, drop them at Lion Chris’s house, or place them in the boxes that have been provided by the Scouts in the Town Hall and the Library. Let’s remember that “We Serve”, and who better to serve than those that serve us in the military!
As everyone is aware, the Red Oak that was dedicated at the Beamer Memorial did not fare well during last summer’s drought nor through this past winter’s extreme conditions. As luck would have it, the weather would not cooperate with us – the tree could not be replaced this past Spring due to the unseasonably wet weather, nor could a tree be planted during the extremely hot temperatures which followed We are happy to report that a new tree has been purchased and it is scheduled to be installed during the week before Cranbury Day.
Thanks in part to the final “sales push” by President Ray, the 4th Annual Trenton Thunder Baseball Outing was a sold out success. As previously announced and reported here, the Board agreed to sell the tickets for $10 to make this a “minor” fundraiser; the Club made just over $100. Lion Bob Virgadamo would like to thank everyone who participated and is hoping to see even more of our Members and their families at next year’s 5th Annual Trenton Thunder Game.
This year, the White Cane Collection, which is being Chaired by Lion Mahlon Thompson, will be during House Tour Weekend, October 10th and 11th. A sign up sheet will be distributed at the September 17 meeting.
Reminders
Frank Marlowe has been our Program Chair for a few years now, and has done quite an excellent job lining up speakers for our bi-monthly meetings. You can all imagine how difficult it can be, finding a years supply of speakers that will be of relative interest to all our Members! We all come in contact with someone interesting on a regular basis. When you do, or if you have any suggestions for speakers, please give Frank a call, or e-mail him at marlowe@cranburynj.com.
It is important that we increase our fundraising capability without requesting money from our small community over and over again. With over 300 commercial locations in our immediate area, the website is one of the easiest and best fundraisers we have. We ask every member to please try to bring in at least one advertiser per year. Refer all advertising leads to Lions Gene Buckley, Dave Shaffer or Bob Virgadamo.
Any member who learns of the sickness or death of another member, or in a member’s family, or any other similar incident or emergency, should contact Lion Dave Cook to activate the “phone tree”, so that all members may be notified.
Don’t forget about our new Eyeglass Collection Box, at its new location in front of the Library.

Fellow Lions, usually, by this time, we have always had a full roster of volunteers to pick up our Members who are unable to drive. For some inexplicable reason, we are severely lacking in pick-up volunteers. We urge you to review the pick up list at the next meeting, and sign up to help our members get to the meetings. Or, call Lion Rick Cusworth (655-2426) to get on the list. Reminder: We Serve.
For those already on the list, if you cannot make your pick-up, and/or if you switch (or need to switch) with someone else, please notify Lion Rick as soon as possible. Riders: please notify the assigned driver if you are unable to make a meeting.
