The Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (HPAC) was established in 1988 for the purposes of protecting, enhancing and perpetuating historical resources within the Township. This committee identifies and designates historic landmarks and districts. It also advises the Planning and Zoning Boards and residents of the impact of development applications on designated historic landmarks within the Township's historic districts. Applications for building permits for improvement or structures within the historic district or modifications to historic landmarks require review by HPAC before issuance.
The Historic Preservation Advisory Committee is comprised of five members who are appointed to four year terms by Township Committee. Members may be non-residents. Unless noticed otherwise, HPAC meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
Are you thinking about remodeling or adding to your house? As you may know, when you apply for a permit to build in Cranbury's Historic District or in the buffer zone around the Village, HPAC must approve your plans and file a "Certificate of Appropriateness" with the Construction Office before your permit can be issued.
HPAC was also created to advise and help people when they are considering work on the exterior of their homes.
HPAC can help you in the early planning stages by discussing the style of your house, its place in Cranbury's history, and its significant elements. HPAC will discuss the changes you are proposing and may make suggestions on how to best maintain the historic integrity of your home. HPAC can also be a source for information on materials and construction techniques that may be of interest to you.
A look at current and recently completed renovations and additions in Cranbury show that people are committed to maintaining the historic character of their homes. This is the spirit that will keep Cranbury the unique place it is for years to come.
HPAC meetings are open to the public. Stop by to listen in or to discuss your plans and ideas. HPAC meets twice a month, on the first and third Tuesday, at 7:30 PM. (check the schedule for location.) Please call Linda Scott at 395-0900 x229 if you would like to be added to the HPAC agenda.
"Cranbury Crossroads - The Village Through
Time"
Cranbury, N.J.-A house tour to showcase Cranbury's
beautiful historic homes will take place, on Saturday, October 11th, 2003, from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"Cranbury Crossroads - The Village Through Time," 2003 House Tour, features six historic homes dating back from 1749 to 1870. Three of the homes are within the historic village, and three are historic farmstead properties in their natural rural settings. The houses will also display beautiful flower arrangements by the Rocky Brook Garden Club.
The house tour coincides with the statewide celebration of "The Crossroads of the Revolution, The Road to Monmouth Heritage Campaign."
We are honoring General George Washington and the Continental Army on the 225th year of their march through, and encampment along Cranberry Brook. They were on their way to the Battle of Monmouth, one of the most significant battles of the Revolutionary War. We invite the public to celebrate Cranbury's proud heritage as the town rolls out the red carpets, drapes the village in red, white and blue, and open our home's doors to journey through town along the path of history.
The tour also features a luncheon by "The Friends of the Cranbury Public Library" at the First Presbyterian Church, on Main St. in Cranbury. The Menu will feature: Curry Pumpkin-Mushroom Soup, Chicken Salad, Dessert and Beverages.
